Who We Are
We are Sharing Peace. The word Islam itself means peace, found through trust and surrender to God, and that's exactly what we're here to share.
Wigan Mosque was founded in 1985, and from the very beginning, its founders worked to build understanding with local schools, communities, and authorities. They lit a torch I'm now carrying forward. I joined that journey in 2009, and everything since has been built on the shoulders of giants, people who cared deeply about faith and gave their time and passion to it.
One of my personal highlights was returning to my old school, Standish High School, the place where I once sat as a student in a religious education class, confused by the number of different religions and wondering whether there was one that tied the main ones together. Later in life, I found my answer: Islam holds that it was the first religion, believing in the same God and the same 25 prophets mentioned in the Bible.
That realisation inspired me to return to schools and share it, and it's what continues to inspire every visit we make today.
The main focus of every talk is building bridges and finding common ground. We visit schools, colleges, and any organisation that invites us, creating a warm, safe environment where people feel comfortable asking us anything.

FAQs
Is there any cost?
No, there's no cost at all. Sharing Peace is run entirely by volunteers, so every session is completely free.
Do you visit schools anywhere in the UK?
We currently focus on schools within about an hour's drive of Manchester. However, by the end of 2027 we intend to have coverage across the UK, so if your school is further afield, please get in touch anyway, as we're steadily building that coverage.
Do you only visit schools?
Not at all. While schools are our main focus, we're happy to visit colleges, training institutions, or any organisation whose members are interested in learning more about Islam. Just get in touch and we'll explore how we can help.
What actually happens during a visit?
We use a PowerPoint presentation to explore Islamic concepts with the pupils and discuss the similarities between Islam and Christianity. Towards the end, we show pictures of beautiful mosques from around the world. It's a relaxed, open session, everyone can ask us anything.
How long does a session last?
Sessions usually run 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how engaged the group is.
What age groups do you visit?
We've worked with pupils across primary and secondary schools, as well as older groups through colleges and other organisations. Let us know who you're arranging the visit for, and we'll tailor the session accordingly.
How far in advance do we need to book?
As we're all volunteers, we book visits within a four week window rather than far in advance. Once you get in touch, we'll arrange a mutually agreeable date and time directly with you.
Can you visit more than one class or group in a day?
Yes, it's easy for us to visit a few classes or groups back to back on the same day, so that as many people as possible have the opportunity to take part.
